Met Dept issues red warning in 5 districts, orange warning in 12 districts and yellow warning in 13 districts of Odisha

In Odisha, extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted in many parts of the state as the weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. The depression lies over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, about 70 km south-southeast of the coastal town of Puri. It is likely to move nearly northwards towards the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts and intensify into a deep depression.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross Odisha and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Puri and Digha later this afternoon. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning in Ganjam, Khordha, Kandhamal, Puri, and Boudh districts, an orange warning to 12 districts, and a yellow warning to 13 districts of Odisha.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have given rise to fear of flooding in several villages in Kundra block of Koraput district, with Kolab and Bori rivers in spate. Affected villagers marooned by the flood water of both rivers are being evacuated to safer places. Malkangiri district in the state has also been cut off from the mainland following floods in different parts. The state government is monitoring the flood situation in some parts of Odisha.
