Meghalaya: UCPF dissolves, backs Congress candidate M D Syiem for MDC elections

In Meghalaya, as the election for Member of the District Councils (MDCs) to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) approaches, political dynamics are becoming clearer each day. Today, the leaders and supporters of the Umroi Constituency Progressive Forum (UCPF) held a meeting at Umroi Umdohbyrthih, during which they decided to dissolve the Forum and extend their support to the Congress candidate.

The meeting was attended by key UCPF leaders, including President Pynskhemlang Sohtun, Vice-President Remius Kharsati, General Secretary Forstar Sohiong, and several other leaders and supporters. In this meeting, it was formally resolved to back M.D. Syiem, who recently joined the Congress party from UCPF.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Pynskhemlang Sohtun clarified the reasons behind their decision to support the Congress candidate. He stated that during election campaigns, the public repeatedly questioned where the UCPF candidate would align if elected. Considering the voice of the majority in Umroi Constituency, UCPF leaders held several discussions and ultimately decided to support M.D. Syiem, who has received the Congress ticket.

The UCPF leaders expressed confidence in their decision, stating that M.D. Syiem’s candidature represents the aspirations of the people. They also announced that a formal event to welcome new members into the Congress party will be held on January 21 at Umroi ground. They invited other supporters to witness this significant day and join them in rallying behind the Congress candidate for the 2025 MDC elections.

The elections for Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADAC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will be held on 21st February 2025.
