National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA-II) nominee James Sangma has been elected unopposed as a Member of the Rajya Sabha after no other candidate filed nominations to contest the seat.
The Rajya Sabha election was slated for June 18th. However, with no opposing candidates, the Office of the Speaker, through the Returning Officer and Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Malthus S. Sangma formally announced that James Sangma was elected unopposed and handed over the certificate of election.
Outlining his priorities, Sangma said he would actively pursue key issues concerning the state, including the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
Noting that these matters have already been endorsed through resolutions passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, he said it would be his duty to carry forward the collective aspirations of the people and the resolutions of the House in Parliament.
