Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said stunting among children under five in the state has declined from 46 per cent to around 36 per cent over the past three years. Addressing the ongoing Autumn session of the state Legislative Assembly, Mr Sangma said the overall malnutrition rate has also come down to 36 per cent. He said the decline is higher than the national average. Sangma attributed the improvement to initiatives including Poshan Abhiyaan, Saksham Anganwadi and the state’s 1000-Days Programme. He said Meghalaya has 6,188 Anganwadi centres. Construction or renovation is underway at 2,148 centres, while 1,670 centres have already been completed.
The Chief Minister also said the state has recorded a 55 per cent decline in maternal mortality. He said an online system is being used to identify high-risk pregnancies and provide additional support.
