The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly today unanimously passed a Government Resolution opposing uranium mining and the establishment of uranium ore processing facilities in the state.

 

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who holds the Mining and Geology portfolio, moved the resolution during the ongoing Autumn Session. It urged the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy and Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) not to permit or undertake uranium mining or processing in Meghalaya.

 

The resolution specifically opposed the proposed Kylleng-Pyndengsohiong-Mawthabah project in West Khasi Hills and called for closure of related activities.

 

It cited Meghalaya’s high rainfall, steep terrain, landslide vulnerability and communities’ dependence on water resources. Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma and other MLAs supported the resolution, which the Chief Minister said reflected the House’s collective stand.
