On the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today, Manipur observed the National Cleanliness Day across the State, commemorating Gandhiji’s enduring ideals of cleanliness, service, truth and non-violence and his vision of a clean and responsible society.
The State Level Observation was held at Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal, in which Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led the gathering in paying floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Addressing the observation, the Governor said Manipur has made significant progress in cleanliness and hygiene in recent years under the Swachh Bharat Mission and stated that the collective efforts of communities across the State have contributed to cleaner villages and public spaces.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said the State Government is taking necessary steps to ensure cleanliness and urged every citizen to contribute towards maintaining a clean environment and society.
The observation also featured a solemn musical presentation by artistes of Government Music College followed by a choreographic presentation by artistes of the Government Dance College.
The Day was also observed in different districts and schools, colleges and Government departments across the State.
Assam Rifles conducted cleanliness drives, environmental awareness programmes and voluntary Shramdaan across Manipur’s Tengnoupal, Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kakching districts from September 17 to October 2, under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.
On Gandhi Jayanti today, over 700 civilians, students and security personnel participated in sanitation drives, waste clearance and awareness activities, promoting cleanliness, biodiversity conservation and the Swachh Bharat-Swachh Manipur pledge.
