On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Navi Mumbai and Thane police in Maharashtra destroyed narcotics worth nearly Rs. 96 crore as part of the nationwide ‘Nashamukt Bharat Abhiyan’ – Drug-Free India Campaign. The Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate destroyed narcotics worth Rs. 56.69 crore seized in 26 cases at the Mumbai Waste Management Company in Taloja, following due legal procedure. As part of its ‘Drug-Free Navi Mumbai’ campaign, the commissionerate also conducted awareness programmes on the harmful effects of narcotics for around 5,000 students from 25 schools and colleges. The Thane Police, meanwhile, destroyed around 600 kg of narcotics worth Rs. 39.03 crore seized in 112 cases registered over the past three years across the commissionerate. The contraband, destroyed under police supervision by the Central Contraband Destruction Committee, included ganja, hybrid cannabis, MD, charas and brown sugar.
