Stating that cities are not merely structures of brick and concrete; but the ‘growth engines’ of a nation’s economic progress, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde today urged cities across BRICS nations to share their experiences, technology, and innovations to build citizen-centric cities for the 21st century. Addressing the inaugural session of BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave 2026 being held in Mumbai, Mr. Shinde said modern cities should be defined by their resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.
Addressing the gathering during the opening ceremony this morning, Maharashtra’s Governor Jishnu Dev Varma underlined the growing interdependence of nations. Stating that the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ is no longer merely a philosophy, but a reality in today’s interconnected world, Mr. Varma emphasized that the conclave must help translate proposed ideas and solutions into concrete action and partnerships.
Convened by Mumbai First, in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of India, the Conclave brings together representatives from around 15 cities and several BRICS nations, policymakers, urban experts and international delegates to discuss the future of urban development.
The conclave is being held under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability”. Over two days, the Conclave will drive focused discussions across climate and environmental resilience; next-generation urban infrastructure and mobility; inclusive and people-centric development along with digital, financial and governance innovations.
