Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region; tremors felt across North India

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan this evening at around 7:04 PM Indian time. Tremors were felt across India, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. Shocks were also felt in several parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana.
 
In Jammu and Kashmir, residents rushed out of their homes in panic as a precaution in several parts of the Union Territory, including Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag, Kupwara and Jammu districts. Authorities have said there were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property so far.
 
Talking exclusively to Akashvani News, Sanjay Kumar Prajapati, Scientist at the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), said the earthquake was moderate in nature and that damage near the epicentre is expected to be minimal. He added that the tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR, Chandigarh and Srinagar.
