The Madhya Pradesh cabinet has approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during a special meeting held at Jagdishpur, a historic town near Bhopal. Akashvani’s correspondent reports that tribal communities have been kept outside the scope of this law.

Madhya Pradesh has taken a major step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code, or UCC. A cabinet meeting was held yesterday at Jagdishpur in Bhopal district, chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. At this meeting, the draft of the UCC Bill 2026 was unanimously approved. The bill will now be tabled in the monsoon session of the state assembly, which begins today. The session will run until 24 July.

 

After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Yadav told reporters that the UCC will give equal status to everyone in the state. He said multiple marriages will no longer be valid in the state. Dr. Yadav explained further.

According to the UCC bill, those in live-in relationships will have to register within one month. Marriage registration will also be made mandatory down to the village level. However, tribal communities have been kept out of its scope.
