Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been adjourned till 2 PM following opposition uproar over several issues, including alleged police action during students’ protests over the NEET issue.
When the Lok Sabha assembled at 11 AM, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla tried to take up the Question Hour, but opposition members raised the issue of alleged police action during students’ protests. The opposition members were demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard.
Mr Birla said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had yesterday made it clear that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is ready to respond to the issue concerning students. He appealed to opposition members to cooperate in the smooth functioning of the House, stating that both the principal demands of the Opposition had been accepted.
The Speaker said the Question Hour is the most important time as it ensures government accountability. He said bringing placards and banners into the House is not in accordance with parliamentary decorum. The Speaker expressed concern over repeated disruptions, saying he is personally saddened over the continuous disruption in the House. Mr Birla repeatedly appealed to all opposition members to cooperate in ensuring the smooth conduct of proceedings. He noted that several important Bills are pending before the House, which are of national interest and need to be taken up for discussion. As the pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 PM.
The Rajya Sabha has also been adjourned till 2 PM over the same issue. When the Upper House reassembled after the first adjournment at 12 noon, Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan took up the Question Hour amid opposition uproar, but it could not be conducted due to sloganeering. Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik tried to reply to a question on offshore wind energy development, but he could not complete his reply. Amid the uproar, the Chairman adjourned the House till 2 PM.
Earlier, when the House met at 11 AM, Ministers laid papers of their concerned Ministries on the Table of the House. Reports of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees on Housing and Urban Affairs, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Transport, Tourism and Culture, and Social Justice and Empowerment were also tabled.
Amid opposition uproar, Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan took up the Zero Hour, but only Dr Santrupt Mishra of BJD raised an issue of public importance. Amid the din, the Chairman adjourned the House till 12 noon.
