The first session of the 16th Puducherry Legislative Assembly began today with the address of Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan.
In his policy address, the Lieutenant Governor said that Puducherry’s economy is on a strong growth trajectory.He pointed that the Gross State Domestic product growth rate, which stood at minus 2.21 per cent in 2020-21, has recovered to 8.12 per cent in 2025-26. The per-capita income of the Union Territory has also increased from 3 lakh 23 thousand 745 rupees in 2025-26 to 3 lakh 44 thousand 926 rupees in 2026-27.
The Lieutenant Governor said that the financial position of the Union Territory has also improved, with total revenue rising from 12,346 crore rupees in 2024-25 to 13,397 crore rupees in 2025-26. Mr Kailashnathan added that the government is focusing on economic growth, infrastructure development, employment generation, digital governance, social protection and climate resilience, with the objective of building a prosperous and self-reliant Puducherry by 2047.
Pro tem Speaker adjourned the assembly proceedings till 3 PM. In the afternoon, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who also holds the Finance portfolio, will present the Budget.
