Legendary Odia Playback Singer Pranab Patnaik Dies at 88

Legendary Odia playback singer Pranab Patnaik, whose distinctive voice captivated generations of music lovers, passed away in Bhubaneswar today at the age of 88.
 
 
With a career spanning over five decades, Patnaik sang for more than 200 films and collaborated with several celebrated national-level singers. A seven-time Odisha State Film Award winner and recipient of the prestigious Jayadev Puraskar, Patnaik’s demise marks the end of an era in Odisha’s musical and cinematic heritage.
 
Pranab Patnaik was among the most celebrated voices of Odisha, leaving an enduring musical legacy across generations. He began his playback journey in 1958 and went on to sing in more than 200 films. His musical versatility extended from playback singing to devotional, folk, Odissi, semi-classical and ghazal music.
 
Patnaik also collaborated with nationally acclaimed singers including Vani Jairam, Usha Mangeshkar, S. Janaki, P. Susheela, Bhupinder Singh, Hemlata and Nirmal Mishra. A seven-time State Film Award winner, he was also honoured with the Jayadev Puraskar for his contribution to Odia cinema and music. With his demise, Odisha has lost a legendary voice whose songs remained popular across generations. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has condoled his demise, describing his contribution to Odisha’s music and cultural heritage as unforgettable.
