Kenya: Women on streets protesting gender-based violence and femicide

In Kenya, hundreds of women took to the streets today, calling for the government to urgently investigate rising cases of gender-based violence and femicide. Carrying placards and chanting messages of solidarity, the demonstrators also raised awareness about the recent disappearances and murders of children reported across the country.
Women’s rights organisations have warned that gender-based violence is on the rise and have called on the government to declare the situation a national crisis. Their demands come in the wake of the death of a local singer who was allegedly doused with petrol and set on fire before later succumbing to her injuries.
Meanwhile, the police said that most reported cases of gender-based violence are linked to domestic disputes, intimate partner violence, sexual offences, assault, and unresolved family conflicts.
