Kargil’s First Heat Pump Dehydration and Cold Storage Facility Inaugurated in Ladakh

In Ladakh, Kargil’s first Heat Pump Dehydration and Cold Storage Facility was inaugurated today at Kantakari near the University of Ladakh’s Kurbathang Campus. Inaugurated by Ladakh MP Haji Mohammad Haneefa Jan, the facility is expected to play an important role in reducing post-harvest losses and creating new economic opportunities for farmers and local entrepreneurs.

Addressing the gathering, MP Jan appreciated the initiative and emphasised the need to encourage youth entrepreneurship, agricultural innovation and startups to strengthen Ladakh’s local economy and generate sustainable employment opportunities.

The energy-efficient technology will enable scientific drying and preservation of apricots, vegetables, herbs and other horticultural produce while maintaining their quality and extending shelf life. The initiative is particularly significant for Kargil, where the short agricultural season and limited processing infrastructure have long posed challenges to farmers seeking better returns from their produce.

Established by The Tropicalist Trust in collaboration with the local Yakzes Cooperative, with support from EcoRainger, CRID and SELCO Foundation, the facility is expected to play an important role in reducing post-harvest losses and creating new economic opportunities for farmers and local entrepreneurs.
