Justice Sunil Balkrishna Shukre becomes new Chairman of Maharashtra Lokayukta Institution

Justice Sunil Balkrishna Shukre, former Judge of the Bombay High Court, was sworn in as the new Chairman of the Maharashtra Lokayukta Institution today. Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath of office to Justice Shukre at a brief oath-taking ceremony held at Lok  Bhavan, Mumbai.   
 
The oath was given as per Section VI of the newly passed Maharashtra Lokayukta Act, 2023. The appointment of Justice Shukre has been made for a period of 5 years or till he attains the age of 70, whichever is earlier.
 
Justice Sunil Shukre graduated from Pune University in 1980, and did his LL.B. in 1983 from Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Law College, Amravati, affiliated to the then Nagpur University. He stood second in the Order of Merit at the LL.B. examination and is the recipient of the Late Kale Memorial Prize for having secured the highest marks in Hindu law at the the LL.B. examination. He commenced his legal practice at Amravati.
 
He did LL.M. in Constitutional Law from the then Nagpur University. He has a keen interest in sports and has represented M.J. College, Jalgaon in Inter-collegiate tournaments in Lawn Tennis and Badminton. He joined the Judiciary as a Direct District Judge from Bar in the year 2000 and since then has worked as Principal District Judge, Kolhapur, Registrar (Administration), Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, Joint Director, Maharashtra Judicial Academy, Uttan, Thane, Principal District Judge, Nagpur and took charge as Registrar General, High Court Bombay on 17th March, 2011. Elevated as Judge of the Bombay High Court on 13th May, 2013.

Rahul Narwekar, MLA Bhaskar Jadhav, outgoing Lokayukta Justice (retd) Vidyasagar Kanade, Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggaral, Members of the Lokayukta Institution, Justice Sandeep Shinde, Lokayukta of Goa, State Chief Information Commissioner Rahul Pande and senior government officers were present.
