US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor today described the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and said the governments at the Centre and in the region have taken significant steps to improve security.
Mr. Gor is on his maiden visit to J&K, where he called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his residence in Srinagar. He described the meeting with the CM as positive and said that both sides have identified key follow-ups to be taken forward in the future.
Regarding the U.S. travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Gor said that although no formal announcement can be made today, the travel advisory should be downgraded as security has improved due to the efforts of New Delhi and the local government. He added that many US citizens would like to visit Kashmir as it is a very beautiful place.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, the meeting was positive and focused on India-US relations and areas where the United States can engage with Jammu and Kashmir. He said, the emphasis was on positive engagement and future collaboration.
