In Jammu and Kashmir, the 80th Independence Day was celebrated across the Union Territory with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm.

 

The main function was held at Srinagar’s iconic Bakshi Stadium, where thousands of people had assembled to witness the celebrations.

 

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah unfurled the National Flag at the Bakhshi Stadium and took the salute at the ceremonial parade.

 

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir was regrettable. He said that after 80 years of Independence, the decision to be a part of India has proved to be right.

 

The Chief Minister said federalism and democracy are the strongest pillars of prosperity and development. He added that his government is committed to the development and progress of Jammu and Kashmir and to ensuring the Union Territory moves forward on the path of peace and prosperity.

 

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also unfurled the tricolor at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar and congratulated people on Independence Day.  

 

Meanwhile, similar functions were held at all district headquarters across the Union Territory, where the National Flag was unfurled and people participated enthusiastically in the celebrations.

 

The celebrations featured colourful cultural programmes showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, along with performances reflecting the spirit of patriotism and national unity.
