Intermittent Heavy Rainfall in Uttarakhand Triggers Frequent Landslides & Rising River Levels

Intermittent heavy to moderate rainfall is continuing in Uttarakhand, causing frequent landslides in the hills and rising river levels.

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Bageshwar, and Nainital districts, while a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts. In response to the heavy rainfall, the Dehradun district administration has ordered the closure of all schools today.

Meanwhile, the Gangotri National Highway near Bishanpur in Uttarkashi, which was blocked due to a heavy landslide, was reopened for vehicular traffic last night.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed all District Magistrates to remain vigilant. He emphasized that immediate measures should be taken to ensure drainage in case of waterlogging in populated areas or on roads.

Mr. Dhami emphasized that ensuring the safety of Char Dham pilgrims and Kanwar yatra participants is the state government’s top priority. He stated that if adverse weather conditions necessitate suspending or delaying the yatra or pilgrimage, such measures will be implemented for safety reasons.
