In Assam, the Inter-Ministerial Central Team comprising six officials from various Government of India ministries has concluded its flood damage assessment visit to the state.

The team inspected the worst flood-affected districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat and held a review meeting with Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota in Dispur yesterday. Senior officials from state departments, central agencies and district administrations also attended the meeting.

During the review, state officials briefed the team on the causes and impact of the recent floods and the challenges in relief and rehabilitation efforts. They informed the team that the floods were unprecedented, particularly in Charaideo and Sivasagar districts, which are not usually flood-prone.

The situation was attributed to extremely heavy rainfall in Nagaland on 19th July, including rainfall departures of 493 per cent in Mokokchung, 108 per cent in Wokha and 45 per cent in Mon, coupled with localised heavy rainfall in Assam.

The team was informed that damage assessment is still underway and that a final flood memorandum will be submitted to the Centre after the flood season. State officials also sought relaxation in SDRF assistance norms for the affected people.

The Inter-Ministerial Central Team assured the Assam Government that its observations would be submitted to the Central Government for further consideration.
