Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today said that the future of the Indo-Pacific will not be shaped by technology alone but will be shaped by the wisdom with which countries use that technology, the partnerships they build and the confidence they create among nations. He added that India stands ready to contribute to this collective endeavour. Addressing the Commemorative Session of the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue in New Delhi, Mr Singh said that India’s maritime responsibilities extend beyond its national coastline. He said that the country has consistently supported an open, inclusive and rules-based maritime order. The Minister emphasized that as India moves towards Viksit Bharat 2047, the maritime domain will play an important role in the country’s transformation. The Minister said that the country’s ambitions are not limited to expanding trade or strengthening naval capabilities, and it seeks to develop a comprehensive maritime ecosystem.
The Minister said that the government is investing in port infrastructure and connectivity and pursuing port-led development through Sagarmala. He said that the government is working towards more efficient and sustainable ports and is promoting coastal economic activity and strengthening the maritime industrial base. The Minister highlighted that India’s approach is reflected in MAHASAGAR, which stands for “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions”. He said that New Delhi recognizes that the security and prosperity of nations are inter-connected and the maritime future of the Indo-Pacific cannot be shaped by any single country acting alone. He emphasized on the need to promote cooperation in research, education, innovation and capacity building. The Minister said that a stronger scientific capability in one country can contribute to the security and prosperity of the entire region.
Stressing environmental issues, Mr Singh said that economic development and environmental responsibility must progress together. He added that the oceans cannot be treated as an unlimited source of resources. The Minister said that national prosperity and ecological responsibility are not competing objectives and they must reinforce each other.
