India’s medal tally rises to three at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in the United States. India’s Basant Kumar Meghwal wins a silver in the high jump, while Shahnavaz Khan wins a bronze in the long jump today. In the men’s high jump, 19-year-old Meghwal cleared his personal best of 2.21 metres to win a silver medal. He became the first Indian to win a medal in the high jump at the World U-20 Championships. Algeria’s Younes Ayachi won the gold, while Great Britain’s Otis Poole took the bronze.
In the men’s long jump, Shahnavaz clinched bronze with a best effort of 7.84 metres. The 18-year-old produced his best jump in his third attempt. Italy’s Daniele Inzoli won the gold medal with a jump of 7.97 metres, while Australia’s Mason McGroder took silver with a personal best of 7.96 metres. Earlier, in the javelin throw, Ashish Yadav won silver and became the second Indian after Neeraj Chopra to win at the World Athletics U20 Championships. Yadav produced his best throw of 74.09 metres in the third round yesterday.
