Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, today said India’s creative economy is growing rapidly. He said the growth is being driven by ideas, imagination, culture, innovation and intellectual property. Dr. Murugan was addressing youth at a seminar on “Law, Policy, and the Creative Economy” in Sonipat, Haryana. The seminar was organised as part of the Jindal Policy Conclave at O.P. Jindal Global University. 

 

Dr. Murugan said sectors such as films, music, gaming, animation, design, publishing, advertising and digital content are creating new opportunities for jobs and entrepreneurship. He said the creative economy contributes 3.1 per cent to global GDP and 6.2 per cent of global employment. He added that around 57 million Indians are already engaged in cultural and creative occupations. The Minister said India’s media and entertainment sector is valued at around 2.5 trillion rupees. 

 

The Minister added that the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector is expected to need nearly 2 million skilled professionals by 2030. He said the government is supporting the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies and plans to set up AVGC Creator Labs in 15,000 schools and 500 colleges.

 

Dr. Murugan also stressed the need for strong legal and policy frameworks. He highlighted copyright protection, fair compensation for creators and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. He urged young people to question assumptions with respect, reason and evidence. He called on them to contribute their ideas and skills towards building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
