Indian Seafarers Rescued Off Oman Coast Following Tanker Attack

A major maritime emergency in the Arabian Sea ended without casualties today after a Palau-flagged oil tanker carrying an all-Indian crew came under attack off the coast of Oman. The vessel, identified as MT Marivex, issued distress calls at approximately 1:30 pm local time after an explosion tore through its engine room, triggering a major fire onboard.

Representatives of the All India Seafarers Union said the tanker was carrying twenty-four Indian nationals when the blast occurred, causing significant damage to the vessel and raising fears that it could sink.

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of renewed military exchanges across West Asia. Hostilities intensified after Israeli air operations in southern Beirut and other parts of Lebanon, which Israel said were aimed at militant targets. The strikes were followed by Iranian missile and drone attacks directed at Israel, prompting retaliatory Israeli strikes on military-related targets in central and western Iran. The latest exchanges have raised concerns about a wider regional conflict and the security of key shipping lanes.

Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters later announced the suspension of military operations against Israel, claiming it had delivered what it described as a “painful response” to recent Israeli actions. The statement warned that military operations could resume if further attacks occur, particularly in southern Lebanon. The announcement came shortly after US President Donald Trump stated that Iran and Israel were seeking an immediate ceasefire and that negotiations aimed at restoring peace were continuing.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Muscat, working closely with Omani authorities, confirmed that all twenty-four crew members of MT Marivex were safely evacuated and brought ashore. Omani maritime rescue teams launched a rapid response operation after receiving distress alerts from the vessel. Indian officials expressed gratitude to the Sultanate of Oman for its swift assistance and confirmed that no fatalities or serious injuries had been reported.

The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation. According to maritime distress communications cited by seafarers’ representatives, crew members initially believed the vessel had been struck by a missile. However, maritime security assessments have suggested the possibility of a drone attack. The tanker, owned by Arihant Shipping Incorporated, has previously attracted international attention after being placed on a United States sanctions-related watchlist over alleged commercial links under scrutiny.

The rescue of twenty-four Indian seafarers from the tanker MT Marivex has brought relief amid growing instability across West Asia. The vessel caught fire after an explosion in its engine room while sailing off the coast of Oman. Omani rescue teams, working alongside Indian diplomatic officials, successfully evacuated all crew members without loss of life.

The incident comes as tensions across the region remain high following Israeli strikes in Lebanon and Iran and retaliatory missile attacks launched by Tehran. Although Iran has announced the suspension of military operations and diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire are reportedly underway, concerns remain over the safety of commercial shipping routes and regional energy supplies.

Maritime security agencies continue to investigate the cause of the tanker attack, while governments across the region monitor the rapidly evolving security situation. India has called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and renewed diplomatic engagement. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said it deeply regrets the latest attacks across West Asia and described the situation as a matter of utmost concern to the international community. The ministry urged all parties to avoid further escalation, protect civilian lives, and conclude ongoing negotiations aimed at restoring peace and stability.
