India will host the prestigious UCI Road World Championships for the first time in 2032, with Pune selected as the host city. The decision is being seen as a significant milestone for the sporting ambitions of Maharashtra as well as the country.

 

The decision was announced at the UCI Congress held in Montreal, Canada, following the final presentation of Pune’s bid. Senior officials of the Maharashtra Government were present in Montreal in support of Pune’s candidature.

 

Hosting the world championship is expected to place Pune prominently on the international cycling map. The event will bring leading cyclists from across the world to the city and is expected to provide a major boost to cycling in Maharashtra and India.

 

The championship is also likely to create opportunities for strengthening cycling infrastructure, training facilities and the overall capacity to host international sporting events. It could further contribute to sports tourism and enhance Pune’s profile as an international sporting destination.
