The BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting began in Guwahati today. Delegates from BRICS member countries are participating in the two-day meeting organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Addressing the inaugural session, Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau, Anurag Garg, who is heading the Indian delegation, said the expansion of BRICS has strengthened the grouping’s capacity to address global challenges, including drug trafficking and substance abuse.
He emphasised that modern drug trafficking networks operate across borders through darknet platforms, synthetic drugs, new psychoactive substances, and maritime routes, making enhanced international cooperation essential.
He proposed the establishment of a dedicated BRICS Virtual Working Group for regular intelligence sharing, analysis of trafficking trends, and coordination of joint law enforcement efforts. The Indian delegation also highlighted India’s zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and its commitment to both stringent enforcement and rehabilitation measures.
