India has secured continued market access for exports of aquaculture products, including honey and eggs, to the European Union beyond September this year, under the amended EU regulatory framework. The European Union has included India in its list of authorised countries eligible to export these products after new regulations aimed at addressing concerns related to Antimicrobial Resistance.
The Commerce and Industry Ministry said India’s inclusion in the authorised list will ensure uninterrupted access for Indian exporters to the European market. The development is particularly significant for the fisheries sector, as India’s exports of fish and fishery products to the European Union are currently valued at around 1.59 billion dollars. The Ministry attributed the achievement to sustained engagement by the Department of Commerce with the European Commission, in coordination with the Export Inspection Council and other stakeholders. It said India’s inspection, testing and certification systems have been strengthened in line with European Union requirements.
The Department of Commerce, the Export Inspection Council and the Marine Products Export Development Authority will continue to work closely with exporters and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with the new standards and maintain high levels of quality and food safety. The government said the move is expected to support export growth, create new opportunities for Indian businesses and further strengthen economic cooperation between India and the European Union.
