India secured the silver medal in the women’s 10m air rifle team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod combining to deliver the country’s first medal of the Games. The Indian trio finished with a team total of 1898 points, placing them behind China in the standings.

The Indian teqball player Quimcy Dsouza missed out on a women’s singles bronze medal after suffering a 2-0 defeat to home favourite Yuina Sakamoto in a closely contested match. Sakomoto prevailed 12-11, 12-11 in a match that saw both games go down to the wire, leaving Dsouza to rue several missed opportunities. The Indian had chances to take control of the contest, holding set point in the opening game before Sakamoto fought back.

Dsouza also established a lead in the second game and even saved a match point with a winning serve, but was unable to close out the contest as Sakamoto capitalised on crucial errors at the decisive moments. However, Dsouza will have another opportunity to claim a medal, as she is set to compete in the mixed doubles bronze medal match alongside Mohamed Anas Beg.

In hockey, the India women’s team began their Asian Games 2026 campaign with a dominant 19-0 win over Uzbekistan in their Pool B opener at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan today. Deepika Sehrawat was the star of the match as she scored eight goals. Ishika Chaudhary scored three, while Lalthantluangi and Neha each bagged two. 

India will next take on Indonesia tomorrow. The opening result gave India an early platform in the tournament, with their forwards and penalty-corner attack both making an immediate impact. The match marked Savita Punia’s 320th senior international cap. She joined Vandana Katariya as the joint-most capped Indian women’s hockey player. Meanwhile, Baljeet completed her 50th senior international cap.
