India Increases Grant to Upgrade Schools in Sri Lanka’s Plantation Regions to SLR 600 Million

India has increased grant support for upgrading nine schools in Sri Lanka’s plantation regions. At the request of Sri Lanka, the Government of India has doubled its financial commitment, raising the total project cost to SLR 600 million. The signing and exchanging of diplomatic letters was held on Friday between High Commissioner of India Santosh Jha and Sri Lanka’s Secretary of Education J.M. Thilaka Jayasundara.

This initiative will focus on improving the infrastructure as part of India’s broader development partnership with Sri Lanka, which has prioritised education through various projects. India’s support in the sector extends to school renovations, e-library setups, vocational training centres, and smart classrooms. A recent highlight includes a STEM teacher training program for plantation schools under a multi-sectoral grant marking the bicentennial of the Indian-origin Tamil community’s arrival in Sri Lanka.
