India has enhanced its financial assistance programme for meritorious students from economically weaker sections at the University of Jaffna, reaffirming its commitment to educational development in Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, distributed scholarships under the expanded Indian grant scheme, which was rolled out from the 2025-26 academic year. The initiative follows the success of an earlier programme launched in 2023-24 that provided 5,000 Sri Lankan Rupees per month to 100 students. Addressing the event, High Commissioner Jha said financial assistance enables students to focus on education, growth and building a better future.
The enhanced scheme, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to India in December 2024, raises assistance to 7,500 rupees per month for 100 first-year students annually. The support will continue throughout their degree programmes, benefiting 400 students by the fourth year.
