Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today said India is emerging as a trusted partner in the global semiconductor industry. Participating at a fireside chat at Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi, Mr. Vaishnaw said trust is crucial in the semiconductor industry, from protecting intellectual property to enabling global companies to design end-to-end products in India. He said trusted supply chains could become one of India’s key strengths.

 

Mr. Vaishnaw said India had set a target of training 85 thousand semiconductor design engineers over ten years. He said 70 thousand have already been trained in four years. The Minister said students across the country are now designing and taping out chips. Around 400 engineering colleges have access to industry-grade Electronic Design Automation tools.

 

Mr. Vaishnaw said India needs a clear 20-year roadmap for the semiconductor sector. He said the industry is among the world’s most complex. India’s approach is to build a strong foundation for sustained and long-term growth. He said the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (Semicon 2.0) focuses on six key areas. These include chip design, materials, fabrication, Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging, or ATMP, research and development, and storage.

 

Later, talking to the media, Mr Vaishnaw said around 30 companies from one country are participating across the pavilions at Semicon India. He said students have also shown strong enthusiasm and curiosity. The Minister said the semiconductor sector is expected to generate more than one lakh jobs.

 

Several MoUs were also exchanged and new collaborations announced at Semicon India 2026 in the presence of Mr Vaishnaw. The initiatives aim to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Mr. Vaishnaw and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also inaugurated the Odisha Pavilion at the event.
