India has achieved over five lakh Aadhar-verified organ donation pledges within three years since the launch of the digital pledge portal in 2023. Addressing the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day event in New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel today highlighted that organ transplants in India have risen to over 20 thousand annually over the past 12 years.

 

Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in encouraging organ donation through his Mann Ki Baat programme, she noted that the Prime Minister has appealed to the nation to recognise organ donation as the greatest donation. He has also highlighted the importance of transporting donated organs safely and securely to save lives.

 

Ms Anupriya Patel also said that India ranks third globally in the number of organ transplants conducted, after the United States and China. She also highlighted that under the National Organ Transplant Program, the government offers financial support in upgrading infrastructure, hiring transplant coordinators, conducting the funeral of deceased donors, transportation and successful transplantation of organs, and undertaking the capacity building and training of healthcare workers.

 

She noted that under the Rashtriya Aarogya Nidhi, financial assistance is provided for organ transplants for people from the economically weaker section. She also highlighted the importance of encouraging citizens to pledge organ donation and ensuring safe and secure transportation.

 

​On the occasion, the minister launched a year-long Jug Jug Jiyo Campaign. This campaign is a national initiative launched to honour organ donors and their families. She also launched e-Pratyaropan, which is India’s next-generation national platform ecosystem for organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
