India condemns attack on commercial vessel Settebello off coast of Oman

 
 
India has condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman today. The External Affairs Ministry said in a statement that of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued so far and three Indians are reportedly missing. It stated that the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing Search and Rescue operation.
New Delhi expressed concern at the continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region, calling them deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region. India reiterated the call for immediate de-escalation of tensions, and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region. It said the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end. India called for the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region in keeping with international law, at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Indian Embassy in Oman today said it has learnt of an incident involving a vessel off the coast of Oman. In a social media post, the Embassy said it is closely monitoring the situation and in close touch with the local authorities.
