In Sikkim, border trade between India and China through the Nathu La Pass will resume from the first of next month, ending a suspension that has been in place since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reopening ceremony is expected to be attended by officials from both sides. The resumption of trade is expected to boost cross-border commerce, benefiting registered traders, transport operators and allied businesses. Trade through Nathu La had resumed in 2006 after remaining suspended for more than four decades.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri commenced his official visit to China today with a meeting with Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Sun Haiyan. They discussed ways to deepen implementation of the guidance of the leaders for bilateral relations, including addressing issues of priority to both sides and by promoting political, people-to-people, academic and think-tank exchanges.
The Foreign Secretary also met Deputy Secretary General of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Hong Liang. They discussed ways to enhance bilateral exchanges at the political and people-to-people levels.
