Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu has said that government aims to triple the country’s air cargo volume by 2030. The current air cargo volume of country is around 3.5 million metric tonnes. Speaking at the inauguration of new sectors under the Trans Cargo Security Hold Area to enhance Air Cargo Connectivity from Delhi Airport today, Mr Naidu said that the reform aims to simplify the movement of cargo between domestic and international destinations through an intermediate airport.
The Minister said that India is expanding its air cargo trans-shipment network by adding new domestic and international destinations. He added that London and Copenhagen will now be connected along with Frankfurt on the international network. On the domestic front, Mr Naidu said that Chennai-Delhi connectivity will be expanded to include Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai. The Minister said that under this initiative, cargo does not need to undergo the entire screening and reprocessing procedure again at the transit point.
Mr Naidu noted that India as a true aviation hub would remain incomplete without an efficient air cargo trans-shipment network. The Minister also highlighted the benefits of faster cargo movement for Indian farmers, particularly exporters of perishable agricultural products.
