Incessant rain betters normal life in several parts of the country. IMD issues red alert for rain in Telangana and parts of Maharashtra in Mumbai.
In Telangana, incessant heavy rains continue to lash several parts of the state. Normal life has been thrown out of gear at many places. River Godavari is flowing at above the mark of second danger level while River Krishna is on spate. Many rivulets, streams, and lakes are overflowing. Hundreds of families from low-lying areas are being evacuated as a precautionary measure. the local authorities have appealed to people at many places not to venture out due to heavy rains.
Our Correspondent reports that the State Chief Secretary Shanti Kumari has appointed special officers to the Six most affected districts to oversee the rescue and relief measures. She also directed the concerns to send two helicopters to carry out rescue operations in Bhupalpally where 4-5 people are missing in the flood water.
Normal life at many places across Telangana state has been severely affected due to incessant heavy rains. Crush gates of many projects across River Godavari and Krishna have been opened to release flood water downstream as very heavy inflows are reaching the reservoirs. The state authorities are making all-out efforts to make the losses minimum and ensure no loss of life. Reports are being poured in about overflowing streams, getting cutting off dozens of villages from the rest of the state due to flood water flowing over national highways. Special officers have been sent to six districts to monitor the relief measures at the ground level.
Mumbai also recorded its wettest July. According to IMD heavy rainfall continues to batter many parts of the city since early this morning. Amid heavy rainfall, the Colaba observatory recorded extremely heavy rainfall at 223.2 mm. The Santacruz observatory representative of suburbs recorded 145.1 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Thursday. The IMD has issued a red alert for the city today. According to the IMD forecast, there would be heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places till this evening.
Amid heavy rainfall, data released by BMC showed the collective water capacity of a total of 7 lakes in Mumbai was filled by 61.58% today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Mumbai registered its wettest July ever yesterday with the month so far witnessing a record 1557.8 mm of rainfall after receiving intense showers yesterday.
Meanwhile, the University of Mumbai has canceled all examinations scheduled to be held on Thursday across the city owing to heavy rains. The new date will the announced later. Authorities also declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and neighborhood regions. Maharashtra has seen a flood-like situation in various parts of its districts owing to incessant rainfall in the state.
