IMD forecasts widespread rainfall across Maharashtra till July 7

Heavy rainfall continued across Maharashtra for the second consecutive day today, disrupting normal life in several parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Maharashtra till July 7.

According to the IMD, Konkan and the adjoining Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. In Mumbai, heavy showers inundated low-lying areas, slowed traffic and disrupted suburban train services on some routes.

The Powai Lake has also started overflowing following continuous rainfall. The University of Mumbai has cancelled examinations scheduled for July 2 for colleges in Palghar district and under the Panvel Municipal Corporation. Schools in Palghar and in the Raigad talukas of Alibag, Panvel, Uran, Shrivardhan, Mhasla, Tala and Poladpur have also remained closed as a precaution.

The IMD has warned of squally weather along the North Maharashtra and South Maharashtra-Goa coasts till July 5, with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
