The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that seasonal rainfall over south peninsular India from October to December is most likely to be normal during the post-monsoon season. The IMD said most parts of the country are likely to receive below-normal rainfall during the season, except some areas of northwest India and southern parts of peninsular India, where rainfall is expected to be normal to above normal. The weather agency said rainfall across the country in October is likely to be below normal. It also forecast above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country during October. However, normal maximum temperatures are likely over some parts of northeast India and isolated areas of central and northwest India.
The IMD said that during this year’s southwest monsoon season, monthly rainfall over the country as a whole was 65 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA) in June, 101 percent in July, 84 percent in August and 92 percent in September. It added that 14 low-pressure systems developed during the monsoon season, including six monsoon depressions, three of which intensified into deep depressions.
