IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh flags off Sekhon IAF Marathon in New Delhi

The Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, today flagged off the second edition of the Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The marathon is organised in memory of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, the only recipient of the Param Vir Chakra from the Indian Air Force.

The event celebrates the speed, endurance and supersonic spirit of the Air Warriors, while inspiring citizens to push their limits and run for national unity. The marathon is being held in three categories of 21 kilometres, 10 kilometres and 5 kilometres. Winners of the run will be awarded cash prizes of up to one lakh rupees.

Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon displayed exceptional courage during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. While defending the Srinagar airfield, he single-handedly engaged six Pakistani Sabre jets in his Folland Gnat. His extraordinary bravery, exemplary leadership and complete disregard for personal safety continue to remain an enduring part of the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force.
