Hungary: Former Supreme Court Chief Andras Baka elected as new President

Hungary’s parliament today elected former Supreme Court chief Andras Baka as the country’s next President. Baka, who will serve in the largely ceremonial role, was elected with the support of members of the governing centre-right Tisza party. Lawmakers from the opposition Fidesz party boycotted the vote and did not take part in the election. This decision marks Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s symbolic step to dismantle entrenched power structures built under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
