Gujarat aims to become India’s leading data centre and AI hub

The Gujarat government today launched the ‘Viksit Gujarat Data Centre Policy 2026-29’ at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. The policy aims to establish Gujarat as India’s leading data centre and AI hub by targeting up to 8 gigawatts capacity. The policy aims to attract a massive investment of 6 lakh crore rupees and generate large-scale employment in the state. It also features a strong commitment to sustainability by mandating that data centres utilise 51 percent green energy and source water from desalination plants. Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that this forward-looking policy aligns with the Union Budget’s vision to make India a global hub for cloud and AI infrastructure, supported by a 20-year tax holiday for service providers. The state policy is expected to drive digital governance, e-commerce, cloud services, and smart manufacturing while boosting the digital economy.
