The government has refuted a digitally manipulated video of former Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, which is being circulated on social media by Pakistani propaganda accounts. The video falsely claims that General Dwivedi resigned in protest and handed over command to General Dhiraj Seth.
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check Unit said the video is an AI-generated deepfake created to mislead the public as part of a disinformation campaign. It clarified that General Upendra Dwivedi never made any such statement.
The PIB also said that the change of the Chief of the Army Staff was a routine transition carried out in accordance with established tenure norms and laid-down procedures following General Dwivedi’s superannuation after more than four decades of service.
The government said Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating such manipulated content as part of a coordinated campaign to spread false narratives and mislead the public.
