Govt imposes holding limits on sugar dealers to curb hoarding and control prices

The government has decided to impose stockholding limits on sugar dealers across the country from the 1st of August till the 30th of November this year. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said the move is aimed at curbing hoarding, discouraging speculative trading and ensuring the continuous availability of sugar at reasonable prices.

The Ministry said all sugar dealers will be required to declare their sugar stocks and update their stock position every week on the Department of Food and Public Distribution’s online portal, foodstock.dfpd.gov.in <http://foodstock.dfpd.gov.in/>. It added that the Department will closely monitor the sugar market and take all necessary measures to ensure adequate availability of sugar at reasonable prices.

According to the Ministry, hoarding and speculative trading have led to avoidable price volatility and a rise in both ex-mill and retail sugar prices. It assured consumers that sufficient sugar stocks are available in the country to meet domestic consumption requirements.
