The Government has commenced calibrated and targeted release of onions from the buffer stock to ensure adequate availability and moderate seasonal price pressures in the coming months. Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Nidhi Khare today flagged off onion vans for retail distribution from Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi for the consumers of the national capital region. Onions from the government’s price stabilisation buffer are being sold at a subsidised rate of 35 rupees per kilogram through NCCF, NAFED and Kendriya Bhandar outlets, as well as mobile vans across Delhi. Talking to reporters Ms Khare said that every year, the government tries to ensure that if there is any increase in onion prices, subsidised onions are made available through retail intervention. She further added that there is no shortage in the production or availability of onions.
The Consumer Affairs Ministry said that onion availability is comfortable to meet domestic demand in the coming months, supported by estimated production of over 307 Lakh metric tons in 2025-26. The Ministry said robust production, availability of buffer stocks and proactive market interventions are expected to ensure adequate supplies and moderate seasonal price pressures in the coming months.
