National Mango Day is being celebrated today to honour the tropical King of Fruits. National Mango Day celebrates India’s rich mango heritage, and in Goa, no mango is more cherished than the Mankurad. Famous for its irresistible aroma, rich sweetness, and unique flavour, the Mankurad is not just a fruit – it is a symbol of Goa’s agricultural pride and cultural identity.

 

Akashvani’s correspondent reports that every summer, the arrival of the Mankurad mango marks one of Goa’s most awaited seasons. Popularly known as the “King of Goan Mangoes”, Mankurad has earned a loyal following for its distinct taste, fragrance, and smooth texture. Recognising its importance, the Goa government has stepped up efforts to encourage Mankurad cultivation.

 

Financial assistance of up to 2 lakh rupees per hectare is provided for plantations in rocky terrain, while farmers in other areas receive support of sixty thousand rupees per hectare. An additional subsidy is also available for digging planting pits, making orchard development more affordable.

 

Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has said the government is working to address farm labour shortages and revive Khazan farming, paving the way for higher agricultural production. On National Mango Day, Goa celebrates not only the delicious Mankurad but also the farmers whose dedication keeps this treasured legacy alive for generations to come.
