The gross merchandise value of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has increased from four hundred twenty two crore rupees to over one lakh fifty five thousand crore rupees in the last decade. This was stated by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. In a social media post, Mr Goyal said that over twelve lakh Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), including more than two lakh led by women, and over 42,000 startups are registered on the portal. He added that these numbers prove that grassroots empowerment is a genuine commitment of the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Minister emphasised that the platform has enhanced competition, improved price discovery, reduced procurement cycle times, and generated significant savings for the Government over the last ten years. He said that the GeM has also strengthened accountability through end-to-end digital procurement. Mr Goyal further said that the platform has made Government markets more accessible to MSEs, startups, women entrepreneurs, and others, while championing the vision of Vocal for Local and Make in India. He added that GeM is emerging as a key driver of self-reliance that is also strengthening the foundation of a Viksit Bharat.
