French authorities have arrested 135 people and seized a range of weapons during nationwide demonstrations, as protests over living costs, education and political issues spread across the country.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said there had been no major incident so far, while police described the situation in Paris as calm. Seized items reportedly included metal balls, lead pellets, fireworks, slingshots, improvised weapons, airsoft guns and a katana sword.
In Orléans, around 11,000 protesters gathered by noon to oppose the far-right National Rally party’s two-day convention. Demonstrations were also reported in Marseille, Lyon and Lille, with clashes between police and protesters in Lyon.
Major museums across Paris shut their doors as France deployed a massive police force ahead of a fresh wave of protests, determined to prevent a repeat of last week’s violent unrest. The previous demonstrations saw widespread looting, torched vehicles and attacks on public buildings, while masked vandals targeted businesses in Paris and other city centres.
