In Ladakh, the first-ever Drass District Festival 2026 was inaugurated today by Deputy Commissioner Drass, Kacho Imtiyaz Ahmed, marking a historic occasion for the newly established district.
The two-day festival aims to showcase the rich culture, traditions, heritage, natural beauty and immense tourism potential of Drass.
The festival commenced with a guided Nature Trail to promote eco-tourism, environmental awareness and wildlife conservation. The programme highlighted the fragile ecosystem of the Drass and Mushkoh valleys, with special focus on the conservation of the endangered Himalayan Brown Bear and protection of its natural habitat.
Various activities, including nature tours, Horse Polo, exhibitions, cultural programmes and stalls showcasing local products and traditions, are being organised as part of the festival.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Drass Kacho Imtiyaz Ahmed emphasised the importance of promoting Drass as a destination for cultural, eco and adventure tourism, while ensuring the preservation of its unique environment and rich heritage.
The festival is also providing an important platform for local artists, youth, artisans, tourism stakeholders and communities to showcase their talent, products and traditions.
The celebrations highlight the message that Drass is not only a land of history and courage, but also a destination of culture, nature and adventure, with immense potential for sustainable tourism.
