Domestic markets end on higher note

 
Benchmark domestic equity indices ended over one per cent higher today. The Sensex surged 965 points to close at 78,151. The Nifty gained 262 points to settle at 24,334. 
However, in the broader market on the National Stock Exchange, Midcap 100 index dropped 0.4 per cent and Smallcap 100 index fell by 0.2 per cent.
Earlier, the markets opened on a moderately positive note and sustained their upward trajectory throughout the session, supported by gains in index heavyweights.
In the Sensex pack, 24 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, Tech Mahindra jumped 3.9 per cent, Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 3.4 per cent and Tata Consultancy Services advanced three per cent. In contrast, SunPharma shed 0.9 per cent, Trent declined 0.7 per cent, and Bharti Airtel lost 0.6 per cent. 
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 14 out of 25 sectors ended in the positive zone. Among the top gainers, Private Banks as well as Top 10 Bank index jumped 1.8 per cent, Mid Small Private Quality Tilt index and Bankex rose 1.6 per cent, and Realty added 1.4 per cent. In contrast, Telecommunication dropped one and a half per cent, Capital Goods slipped1.3 per cent and Healthcare lost 1.2 per cent. 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2 thousand 500 declined, 1 thousand 722 companies advanced, and 190 remained unchanged.
