Sensex has registered a gain of 114 points to settle at 78,080 and Nifty declined 40 points to 24,396 today. In the broader market on the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index gained over 0.1 per cent, and the Smallcap 100 index rose 0.3 per cent.
The Sensex traded on a subdued note during the intra-day trade. However, it erased its losses and closed higher following the Closing Auction Session adjustment. The weekly expiry of the futures and options contracts of Sensex also added to the volatility. Conversely, the Nifty remained in the negative zone throughout the session amid lingering geopolitical uncertainties.
In the Sensex pack, 19 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, Indigo climbed 2.8 per cent, NTPC as well as Bharat Electronics Limited advanced two per cent and Larsen and Toubro added over 1.9 per cent. In contrast, ICICI Bank lost 1.3 per cent, Titan dipped one per cent and Reliance fell 0.8 per cent.
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 17 out of 28 sectors ended in the positive zone. Among the top gainers, Telecommunication as well as FMCG added one per cent, Realty rose one and a half per cent and Services gained 0.8 per cent. In contrast, Metal declined nearly one per cent, Commodities as well as Insurance shed half a per cent and Top 10 Banks fell 0.2 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2,192 companies advanced, 2,127 declined and 226 remained unchanged.
